The Google Art Project has been launched demonstrating a number of "GigaPixel" images of various well known art works, from a variety of different collection, including NG1314:The Ambassadors, Hans Holbein the Younger.

This image of NG1314 created for this project was captured over night by an external company. This page has been set up to discuss the issues involved with capturing images of a similar resolution here in the National Gallery.

What resolution is required ?

Part of this discussion could involve establishing what resolution we would like to be able to capture, relative to the physical size of a painting. So the actual images would be bigger for bigger paintings, but it would always be possible to view a painting at the same magnification.
