Art Handling Technician Induction
In Advance:
• Schedule appointment to receive security card and swipe card.
• Prepare computer and TMS access through the Helpdesk when start dates are known.
• Order safety shoes.
• Purchase multi bit screwdriver and 10m retractable tape measure.
1st Day (from 9am):
• HR induction at St Vincent house.
• A one hour introduction meeting with the Head of Department. Induction program for the week will be explained and a copy given to the inductee. Other subjects covered will include the basic administration procedures of the Department. The current management structure will also be explained.
• Inductee will meet with their Line Manager after seeing the Head of Department and the basic requirements for the HR induction will be covered during the day, including emergency evacuation procedures. A basic tour will also be conducted which should include introductions to other departments. Personal tools and safety shoes will be distributed at this time.
2nd Day:
• After 10:30 for two hours, instruction on the practice wall. This to include practical exercise of fitting out frames and hanging a work using Gadgets. At the same time, basic Trolley picture stacking and tying off will also be demonstrated and practiced. This section may be given by one of the standard technicians.
• After lunch, basic National Gallery painting pack to be demonstrated and theory explained. Packing case format also to be looked at. This to be given by a Senior Art Handler.
3rd Day:
• After 10.30, instruction on the use of both Case Rollers (this to include full set up of the main Case Roller). This to be given by the Head of Department.
• After lunch, instruction on the use of the Stacker Trolleys, given by a Senior Art Handler.
4th Day:
• After 10.30am, an introduction to the Emergency Plan and the Departments role. This to include instruction in the use of the emergency equipment and an explanation of the role of Salvage Team Leader and Salvage Co-ordinator.
• After lunch, an explanation of working practices in the National Gallery exhibition spaces. This to include behaviour around couriers, rules regarding power tools etc.
5th Day:
• After 10:30, a session on workshop awareness. This will include a Health & Safety section as well as the location of screws and tools etc, and the correct ordering procedure. This to be given by the Senior Art Handler/HR representative for the Department.
• After lunch, a review of working at height legislation within the Gallery and the Department solutions.
• Review of the induction, questions answered and any missing areas identified.
Further internal training required:
• One full day of Blue Hoist and Ejector Plinth instruction.
Certificated training required:
• Genie training
• Power tool training
• Mobile access platform
• Workshop tool training
Documentation to be given out:
The following departmental documentation will be given to the new member at the one hour introduction meeting on the first day. The relevant documentation will be referred to at the appropriate point during the week’s induction:
• Risk assessments for picture movements (three categories: small, medium and large)
• Genie standard operating procedure around the Gallery
• Case Roller operating procedures (both types)
• Stacker Trolley operating procedure
• Altarpiece moving procedure (present & proposed)
